Planned Parenthood is excited to be launching our new Tumblr that’s all about sexual and reproductive health – bodies, birth control, relationship issues, “is it normal for this to do this?” type things. In the coming weeks and months we’ll be sharing what we know, answering questions, and just… tumblring.
We hope you like it! And we hope it helps.
Okay, tumblr. Fire away. I know you want to…perhaps you’ll learn something in the process.
“Seen through Buffy’s eyes, some of the more sexist gender roles and patriarchal Hollywood themes embedded in the Twilight saga are exposed in hilarious ways,” writes Jonathan McIntosh about his classic mashup of the two vampire franchises. With Twilight’s release of Breaking Dawn on November 18, it’s worth revisiting this subversive, and highly entertaining, critique.
Not putting this in the Twilight tag because I don’t want to make anyone upset. But for the most part, Buffy is pretty feminist. The Buffy/Spike relationship gets into the danger zone in season 6, but season 7 makes up for it. Then again, everything looks feminist when you compare it to Twilight.
Meandering through the New York Times’ site brought me to this article from late April, in which two film critics briefly discuss the feminist-fetishist dichotomy of the violent female character archetype that’s become increasingly popular.
Short & interesting read. Although those are usually my favorite characters, I agree that the way they’re usually presented is kind of problematic…
It’s too early for me to be able to tell, with my limited legal knowledge, exactly what the fallout of the Wal-Mart Stores v. Dukes case will be. However, one thing I learned in a political science class last semester is that cases with cash-strapped plaintiffs like Betty Dukes rarely get far unless they have a high-powered attorney in tow, lured by the prospect of a lucrative class-action suit. This Supreme Court decision could thus be a major blow for the little guy, in addition to being another case in which gender discrimination went unchecked.
I remember reading and really enjoying this book about Charley Parkhurst when I was younger.
She was a kick-butt female stagecoach driver and possibly the first woman to vote (while disguised as a man) in California. There’s a lot that’s unknown about her life (did she have a kid? I’d like to think so, but we’ll probably never know for sure) that is discussed in this interesting article that pieces together what we do know about her life.
BEST MOM EVER.
Talk about a multi-tasking mom. Tiffany Goodwin snagged a foul pop-up while holding her 8-month-old son at a Richmond Flying Squirrels game. Her husband tried calling her off— he’s been waiting 38 years to catch a foul ball at a game. This was Tiffany’s second one this year!
It is now officially acceptable to use the word “grrl” in a game of Scrabble.
